The Pecking Order is a tale with a moral compass that guides the reader through the lives of two boys in high school. One is an angry bully and the other is a partially handicapped boy, who has defined his life by living it in a deep state of being a depressed victim.
Zack is a small, unusual-looking, mildly-autistic fifteen-year-old boy who has been relegated to the bottom of the “pecking order” in a large suburban Southern California high school. The consequences of being different are horrific. One autumn day he is physically and emotionally abused beyond his limits of endurance and plans to get revenge. Out of desperation, he does what he has been practicing in video games for years, he brings a semi-automatic rifle to school, shoots his abuser, and paralyzes him for what may be the rest of his life.
The Pecking Order illuminates the lives of the shooter- and his victim- before and after the shooting. It also tells the story of the school’s principal who courageously puts his career on the line to make changes that will improve the quality of life, connections, and education of his students in the hope that he will never have another school shooting.
